For young as well as for elder people who have to deal with the topic of dental prostheses, modern implantology bears many advantages. Many previous difficulties like bad pronounciation, unnatural feeling or feeling of pressure while chewing can be avoided with a fixed dental implant. The chewing-forces that occur while eating are transferred to the surrounding bones by the dental implant. Accordingly it also prevents bone atrophy caused by lack of strain.

An implant disposes of an artificial root made of pure titanium. This metal is marked by an outstanding tolerance by tissue. To the day there hasn’t been any record of an allergic reaction to titanium which makes titanium a perfectly bio-compatible material.

Preparations for the implantation

Before the actual insertion of the implant, the present teeth are repaired and possible periodontitis is treated. Furthermore the number, position and type of implants are determined through a computer based treatment plan. This is done by the computer by the micro-millimeter so the later prosthesis fits perfectly while looking good at the same time.

Other preconditions like the bone structure of the jaw bones are examined as well. This is of substantial importance as with age and with lacking pressure on the jaws the jawbones decrease. At such a spot the implant would have no hold in the jawbone.

Individual cases require bone grafting

In such a case the dental surgeons can graft the bone. For small areas this is done quickly and easily, in most of the cases at the same time when inserting the implant. For larger areas the grafting is done beforehand. During the time of the healing-in the implant and the bone tissue form a unit and melt together. According to the kind of jaw this phase can take from 2 to 6 months after which the titanium insets are freed in a small operation and the dental prosthesis, i.e. the crown, bridge or denture is fixed safely.
